I am so thankful for the students I have this school year. The Brufftopians have done so much this year and it is only November 26th. Some of the things we've accomplished this year include beginning Kid Blog, we wrote to pen pals, completed three units in math, units in reading & writing, but most importantly we've made incredible progress with our growth mindsets. At times, I have wanted to have a fixed mindset about things. I'll think to myself, "I am really good at giving feedback in math." Then, I've thought about how I see so many students embrace their growth mindsets and I remember that my effort and attitude determine things, not my ability. I'll adjust my thinking and rescript myself by saying, "Today I am going to find student exemplars to give context to my feedback." Implementing the growth mindset in the class was most evident yesterday in P.E. class. The students were given the opportunity to design a movement, perform the movement in front of every student and have each student guess what the movement was. Just thinking how much of a risk each student would have to take makes my head spin. Why? Because in order to have students guess what your movement was, first, someone would have to be okay with taking a risk, secondly, take a risk while standing in front of the whole class, thirdly, possibly be misunderstood and asked to do it again. The students knocked it out of the park. For me to watch and observe, I was impressed see studnet embrace the challenge and push through the difficultly. So when I was asked to do the same things as my students, I wanted to balk at the request. However, I changed my thinking and embraced a growth mindset. Check out some of the students as they exercise their growth mindsets and inspired me to do great things. by Tamera WissingerOur class loved listening to Gone Fishing by Tamera Wissinger as our class read aloud. Check out some of the three students book reviews below. Today, many of the students misplaced their math handouts. Some how most of their handouts were donated to the recycle bin. Please see the link for the handout below in the event your child needs to have an extra copy. Students are completing question number four.
Capacity Creature One of my students came up to me on Friday, November 13, 2015 to show me something from their notebook. Naturally, I was interested and was game for what they had to show me. Can you solve it? What does the word on top say? Yes, it has an "I-N-G" at the end. The second word is obviously "TO," right? Of course. So, complete the phrase.
Guest Post by Dr. AntonGood Morning Bowman Community,
I hope you enjoyed this delightful November weekend. I just wanted to share a quick reminder that this Wednesday, November 25, 2015 is a half day. All students will be dismissed at 12:15. There is NO EXTENDED DAY on this day. All buildings will be closing. Please be sure that your child's classroom teacher is notified in writing as to how your child will be getting home. We wish you all a safe and fun Thanksgiving weekend with family and friends. Mary What a story! If you haven't read any of Rick Riordan's books, you're a little late to the demigod party. Better late than never, right? For those who need a crash course in all things demigods, demigods are the children of the Greek and Roman deities (Zeus/Jupiter, Poseidon/Neptune, Ares/Mars). The Greek and Roman gods do not interfere in mortal affairs so the demigods (their children) are tasked with saving the world. Some famous demigods include: Hercules, who is known for the 12 labors, Achilles, the hero of the Trojan War, Dionysus, who was raised to a god & the modern day heart throb, loyal friend, and in every sense of the word, a true hero, Percy Jackson. The Mark of Athena is the third book in the Heroes of Olympus series. It's easy to get lost in the fast paced action and quest the characters embark on. However, it is important to realize Percy Jackson along with his demigod friends (heroes as they're called in the book) have to work together and overcome their own internal struggles to save the world. Rick Riordan shows us that need to have more than incredible powers or being gifted. Using your brain instead of braun, working together to solve a problem and trust are the things that truly matters. Link to request the book through Cary Memorial Library. Other similar titles worth reading in case you've already read The Mark of Athena.
To get more information about The Mark of Athena, check out Rick Riordan's website. Remember, Brufftopians prevail with a growth mindset. Thursday, November 13th was the inaugural celebration of Story Book Character Day. Many students throughout the Bowman Community dressed as characters from their favorite books. After the parade, students entered the gymnasium for a school read aloud of Small Pig by Arnold Lobel. The fourth graders were able to see the many characters the other Bowman students dressed up as. While some characters required a scarf, a recognizable hat, or a curly wig, there were plenty that of characters who simply needed to wear a specific color combination. Most people, teachers included, dressed up as characters from picture books. But there were a good number of students who dressed as a character from chapter books. Some highlights from the day. |
