Starting at a new school is scary, even more so with a giant hearing aid strapped to your chest! At her old school, everyone in Cece's class was deaf. Here she is different. She is sure the kids are staring at the Phonic Ear, the powerful aid that will help her hear her teacher. Too bad it also seems certain to repel potential friends. Then Cece makes a startling discovery. With the Phonic Ear she can hear her teacher not just in the classroom, but anywhere her teacher is in school--in the hallway...in the teacher's lounge...in the bathroom! This is power. Maybe even superpower! Cece is on her way to becoming El Deafo, Listener for All. But the funny thing about being a superhero is that it's just another way of feeling different... and lonely. Can Cece channel her powers into finding the thing she wants most, a true friend? This funny perceptive graphic novel memoir about growing up hearing impaired is also an unforgettable book about growing up, and all the super and super embarrassing moments along the way. I am currently reading El Deafo by Cece Bell. It is a graphic novel, get excited! There have been two requests students have made consistently throughout this past school year: 1. students wished I recommended more books that had main characters that were girls, and 2. more super powers. That has led me to El Deafo. It didn't hurt that this book has won a ton of awards, too. Check that list out below. Try out El Deafo if you have not selected an independent reading book yet.

The students in the class self generated themes for their magazines. The topics ranged from football to art to a class read aloud, The Unwanteds. The work the students created is a reflection of the students diving into their theme.
Thank you all, for making the Magazine Project a success! It was quite the ordeal with managing due dates, articles, editing, and formatting. Each group worked their hardest to put together a wonderful magazine. I am so proud of the way students work together to achieve one common goal. I hope you continue to enjoy this magazine for years to come. Special thanks to: The amazing Editors who dedicated some of their free time to format and edit submissions. Dr. Anton and our sensational Bowman staff for all their hard work teaching, helping and encouraging our students to submit their work. The terrific parents who took the time to come into the classroom to help with editing, typing, and proof reading. Also, the incredible parents who contributed their effort and energy at home. The irreplaceable teachers who kept students motivated and clarified all types of questions . The wonderful LPS print shop for their printing services. And especially our generous PTA for funding this wonderful endeavor! You can download the magazine. Click the link, The Magazine Project, to go to the page with student work. HAPPY READING!!!!! There are only a few days left in the school year. Members of the class have been sharing their civilization projects that they've completed. Some of the civilizations that we've had a chance to learn about at Annetopia, Starnia and the Island of Music.
