Guidance Department is Doing Lessons in 4th GradeThe guidance department has begun a series of lessons in the classroom. The goal is to bring "Intent and Impact" to the fore front of students' minds. Although many students may know the difference between what intent and impact mean. Students are now learning that it is important to think about how we may intend for our words to mean one thing. But those words may come out and have an unexpected impact on others. Every fourth grader was given the challenge to start a positive ripple. That could be something as simple as smiling at someone in the hallway, holding the door for the person behind you, or even saying something kind to a friend. Like a pebble cast into a still pond, the wave will ripple out and spread just as the act of kindness will spread throughout the school. During the second session with the Guidance Department, Ms. Uzenski asked students, "How have you used what you learned about impact and intent of words or spreading acts of kindness over the past week?" Students responded by saying they've seen more kids at recess helping each other, one student smiled at another student. Another student decided to play with a new group of students that they had never played with before. The fourth graders were not alone in realizing all of the kindness spreading throughout the past week. The guidance department had no issues reported with fourth graders during the week, too. That is amazing! Students exceeded the challenge of spreading kindness and thinking about the impact and intent of their words. Ask your child what they've learned so far. Also, be sure to encourage your child to think about the intention behind their words and the impact they've left on you.
