Guest Post from Ms. Janet HaasDear Beginning String Players and families,
We are entering the final weeks of the school year and I want to let you know about our Spring Concerts, year-end assessments and the Gr. 5 lesson program. Our beginning students are busily working on their concert songs. The pieces are: Lullaby (Orchestra Expressions, pg. 37), Kookaburra, Take Me Out to the Ball Game and Rock On Strings (Supplement Book, pg. 42-43). The Gr. 4 players will perform the first two pieces alone. The second two pieces will be performed with the Gr. 5 players. The concert songs do not need to be memorized; students should feel free to write in any fingerings or letter names to help them learn their pieces. On the concert days, if your family owns a folding music stand, please send it to school with your child (label all parts of the stand so it won’t get mixed up with the school’s stands) Lessons will continue until June 10th. At the last lesson, the string teachers will be listening to each child play one of their concert songs (either “Take Me Out to the Ball Game or Kookaburra). They will provide a written assessment of your child’s skill level and recommendations for continuing next year on a stringed instrument. Lessons continue in gr. 5, during the school day. As advanced students, we encourage our gr. 5 players to join the All Town Elementary Orchestra, which meets on Thursday afternoons at the Bridge School from 12:45-1:45. For most students, All Town Orchestra is their first ensemble experience. They gain valuable orchestral skills that they can use in middle school and high school. All Town Orchestra rehearsal is also like having a second lesson; skills introduced in lessons are reinforced and used in the repertoire. The Bowman Spring Instrumental Concerts are on Friday, May 27 for the school and Friday, June 3 for families at 9:15 AM. To prepare our students for their final performance, we will combine all our classes on Fri. May 20th. If your child can bring a folding music stand for that rehearsal (as well as for the concerts) we would appreciate it. We look forward to seeing you at the Bowman Spring Instrumental Concert. If you have any questions, please feel free to email me at [email protected]. Sincerely, Janet Haas
