Ask your child about the latest game we've learned in Math. Students are learning more and more about the properties of polygons, lines, rays, segments, and angles. Actually, we are learning more and more about the properties that make Geometry a meaningful unit of study. By making connections with geometry & time and geometry & area, the students are learning that geometry (just like everything else in math) is all around us.

Below are a few essays I received from students two weeks ago. The students all delivered their work to me at the same time. There was a leader in the group that said, "You said things are really important if it is said more than once. So here are a bunch of reasons you must change your mind."
Clearly my students are listening to me. I've shared, in reading and writing lessons, that authors restate important ideas multiple times in multiple different ways. The three authors of the essays wanted to make sure I didn't miss their point. Even if I was trying to ignore their point of view (something I'd never do), I got their point immediately, and I was pretty impressed. Read the all of the essays and notice the top of essay 3. It says D3, as in draft 3. Clearly this topic was something worth getting out and getting right. What are your thoughts? Parents from across all grades came "back to school" to learn how to best support their child in math. Many parents learned the power of the word, yet. Parents were also exposed to the Growth Mindset, problem solving techniques, experiencing productive struggle first hand, modeling one's thinking, mistakes, and learning what good questions are. Take a look below at a few of the handouts that were given to parents. If you would like more information, please check out the Bowman School Math Team webpage. In case you missed any part of the video from the Parent Math Night, need a refresher on what the Growth Mindset is, or you would like to be exposed to some more information, check out the video below. Once you've shown me that you have completed two reading logs (no open spaces!), you can begin working on a new assignment on Kid Blog.
You will need to write a post about your book by Monday morning. See the details below. Remember, reading is thinking. That means doing blog post (explaining your thinking about your reading) is a much better use of your time. As Deniz B. said, "This is so much better than just writing it down. This takes more time but it's much more fun." When I asked another student their thoughts, they refused to comment but I could see the smile on her face. Regardless, I know students are going to be pumped up about doing Kid Blog updates instead of filling in their reading logs. Details:
Due Date:
The students in the Bowman school are participating in a school wide food drive organized by the fifth grade student council. All fourth grade classrooms have been given the task of bringing in oatmeal. The oatmeal containers that 5th grade student council members have requested be donated are the cylinder oatmeal containers.
There is no obligation to take part in the food drive. This is a community outreach program that the fifth grade student council is encouraging students take part in. Please donate what you can! |
