This past Tuesday the students went on a field trip to the "Old Res." With morning showers and potential for a cold day in the forecast, we braved the elements and had an awesome day. I think it goes without saying that the students had a great time. We were able to search for the crayfish in their natural habitat. Some students found crayfish, others found tadpoles, and one found a catfish. Who would have thought we'd find a catfish! A HUGE HUGE HUGE thank you to the chaperones that volunteered their time. You didn't have to give up time in your busy schedules to go on a fourth grade field trip, but you did. Hopefully you learned something about crayfish, the Old Res, and what it is like to lead a group of nine and ten year olds. I can't say it enough, the students and I really appreciated having you with us!

The book fair is scheduled for November 4th - 10th. Please be sure to see the flyer below or check the Bowman PTA website.
Student reasons why you should be interested in the book fair: Sanidi W. says, "I think I should be able to buy a book at the book fair because books help us learn. Books will help us learn because some books teach things like science." Olivia C. says, "I want a new book because I love to read." Pedro D. says, "You can get new books and not get stuck with reading old books over and over." Nick W. says, "I want to help other people get books. I want the school to get money so we can get new books." Book Fair Volunteers are needed. Please click the link to sign up to be a volunteer. 1 Children and adults are welcome. 2 View the Paint Mine Conservation area through the eyes of Native Americans who lived there before the colonists came. Find out how native people used plants, animals, and minerals from this special place for food, clothing, shelter, medicine, toys and ceremonies. 3 Severe inclement rain or lightning will cancel the walk. Why you should attend “Paint Mine and Hennessey Conservation lands have 49 acres and 2 miles of trails. They are beautiful in all seasons. Paint Mine includes a hilly upland forest, a wetland area under the power lines, and a ten-acre meadow. The natural ochre deposit at Paint Mine is a yellow-brown pigment that was used for coloring paint in the mid-1800s. You should see many pieces of ochre on your walk. You will learn a lot on this interesting walk and have a good time, too.”—Jane Warren, Citizens for Lexington Conservation walk coordinator About the event WHEN 1:30 – 3 p.m. Sunday, October 25 WHERE Meet at the parking lot of Estabrook School, 117 Grove St. INFO Clclex.org CONTACT Walk Leader: Fran Ludwig ([ mailto:Fludwig12 (@) yahoo.com ]Fludwig12 (@) yahoo.com; 781-861-7231) The students have become experts at handling the crayfish. Some of the students have even named the crayfish since they've been in our class for such a long time. Please ask you child what they've learned about the crayfish in science? Be sure your child goes deeper than, "Jaw feet." That isn't a full sentence and the students know lots about the crayfish. So that you don't have to feel like your pulling teeth to get more information out of a relutant learner, you can ask probing questions like:
Once again the Bowman Fun Run was a success. Lots of parents ran with kids, lots of kids ran faster than their parents, teachers ran with students, and lots of students ran fast than teachers. One thing that everyone could agree on was the brisk 45° start kept runners on the move. After all, once the wind starts blowing, there is no more motivation needed to get a runner to pick up the pace.
At the finish line, runners were greeted by cheering family and friends. Ms. Glick and I had a great view of the runners coming down the stretch. Although it was fun to watch people run. I really enjoyed catching up with a number of Brufftopians who moved on from Bowman School. I believe the saying goes something like, "Once a Brufftopian, always a Brufftopian." Some of my favorite quotes of my former students who I was able to reconnect with at the Bowman Fun Run include:
In school students have been able to begin working on a typing program called Type To Learn 4. Please download and read the PDF file for more information. Following the steps to install the software on a home computer is a small step towards assisting your child in improving their typing skills.
Using the program is not mandatory. But it won't hurt to spend sometime improving their typing if they finish their homework quickly on any given day. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to reach out to me. |
