Parents,
Please check in with your child today regarding the science project students will be completing. They will be bringing home a handout that gives more information. In the event you do not see the handout, please see the information below. We've begun our Astronomy unit. Students have learned that in ancient times people used the sun and moon to tell time over long periods. However, the students are going to be making a 30 second timer using something other than the sun and moon (to tell more accurate time in a short period). They'll be able to use materials from school and home. It is expected that students test, improve, test and improve until they create a 30 second timer. This is going to be due Wednesday, March 16, 2016. If you have any questions, please let me know.

Guest Post by Chris LeDoux, Strings InstructorDear parents,
Congratulations to your child for all the work that culminated in the 2016 Winter Orchestra Concert last month. As a group, we've made a lot of progress so far this year. We'd like to keep the momentum going! Beginning last week, we started an incentive program for practicing, which will go up until April vacation. Here are the guidelines: * Students should keep track of their practice time in the chart at the front of their supplements, where their assignments are located. * Students need to get a parent's signature on their practice chart each week. *For each week that students have practiced 15 (or more) minutes on at least 5 days, and have a parent's signature, they will earn 1 star. *I will assign 2 "project songs" over the course of the 8 weeks. Students will need help making a recording of those songs. The recording can be audio or video. The recordings can be shared with me through Google Drive, sent to <[email protected]>, or uploaded to YouTube. I will listen to the recording and give your child feedback if your child has properly demonstrated the required skills or if the assignment needs improvement. If creating and uploading a recording is absolutely not possible, please email me or send in a note so that I can make alternate arrangements to hear your child play individually. * Subject line for the email should be *your child's name* Project Song * Project songs are worth 3 stars. They will be included on students' assignment stickers. * Students who have earned 10 stars by April vacation will get to take a trip to my Prize Box! While participation in the practice incentive game is optional, we hope your child will choose to take part in this fun program. For the remainder of the year, we will continue building on the skills we have already learned. We will also introduce a number of new skills before our final concert (please check http://performingarts.lexingtonma.org/calendar/calendar.html for your school's spring concert date). Continuing the habit of home practice is vital to helping your child master these new skills! As always, please email me if you have any questions. Attached to this email is the Bowman Broadside for March. Thank you again to Suman Murali for preparing this for us. I wanted to share a few upcoming dates of note for district information. On Tuesday March 8,2016 the App Geo and the Student Assignment Committee will be sharing a preliminary presentation about possible scenarios for reducing crowding in some schools with the School Committee. School Committee meetings are open to the public and are broadcast on LexMedia. Please check out the district website for the school committee agenda and timing if you are interested. On Thursday March 10, 2016 we will have a parent coffee in the library from 8:45-9:45. The topic of discussion will be around the presentation to the school committee from App Geo. Bowman's representatives from the School Assignment Committee, Alison Stevens and Cathy Swan will be present and we will have a chance to talk about what has been presented and the work of the committee. If you have questions after the school committee meeting and are unable to attend one of the forums or discussions, you may email them at [email protected] On Saturday March 12 from 10-12AM there will be an Open Forum with members of the School Committee to discuss the scenarios and implications from App Geo with members of the public. There will be an additional Open Forum on Wednesday March 16 from 7-9PM at Clarke Middle School. For those of you with friends, new neighbors or younger children, district-wide Kindergarten Orientation will be held for parents only on Thursday March 17 from 6:45-8PM at the Estabrook School. If you know of new families that have not yet called the school for a registration packet, we hope that you will pass on the word to call our Bowman main office for this important information. March is a busy time of year, and there are lots of events happening. Hope you can be here for Disco Bingo Friday Night (March 4,2016). It is always a lot of fun. Happy March! I hope you all had a restful February Break with your children. Long before the break (a month ago), I gave the students a long-term assignment. Students will need to write a summary for a book or create a book trailer that they have already completed reading. It is due on Tuesday, March 1, 2016. Many students have been working incredibly hard on their projects. Most are working in groups, other are working independently and some are still in limbo. Be sure to check with your child to be sure they have decided on a specific book, the book has been completed, they’ve decided on whether they are going to do a summary or a trailer. Finally, many students have really enjoyed being able to view the videos on the class blog. When the videos are submitted, I am planning to post the videos so the students will be able to view them. If you would prefer not to have your child represented in a video on the Internet, please advise them to complete the book summary. Once again the assignment is due on Tuesday, March 1st. Guest Post from Dr. AntonGood Afternoon Bowman Families,
I hope that you are enjoying the unexpected snow storm. I was not really expecting snow when yesterday was in the high 40's! I wanted to share with you that I will be out of the building next week. In my absence, Beth Glick will be your go-to person should you need any help. We anticipate business as usual. You may have heard that I will be on my first trip to India. Since I first taught about India as a second grade teacher over 20 years ago, India has been a top location on my bucket list. Some of your students may have told you that they will be "traveling with me". Our second grades are currently in a Social Studies Unit on India, and I will be blogging with them as together we learn more about the places that I am visiting. They have armed me with a long list of questions, and I hope that we will be able to answer some of them as we travel. In Art next week students at each grade level will be exploring different aspects of India art, and the fourth grades will be looking to connect this travel with mathematics. The blog allows for students to write back, and classrooms will be doing this next week. As I will be traveling for two weeks, I invite you to follow along at home, continuing your child's experience. You can find our India blog at www.bowman2016.blogspot.com. Attached to this email are two newsletters, the PTA Broadside for February and a newsletter from Karen Tripoli, our K-5 Mathematics Curriculum Coordinator. We hope that you will find them interesting. One thing I want to bring to your attention is that the Spaghetti Dinner, planned for after February vacation is almost sold out. Only the third seating remains with any spaces. We will not be able to add spots for this event as there are fire code capacity limits. We appreciate your understanding. I wish you all a wonderful week and hope you can join us on Bowman's virtual trip to India. Mary Ask your child about the latest game we've learned in Math. Students are learning more and more about the properties of polygons, lines, rays, segments, and angles. Actually, we are learning more and more about the properties that make Geometry a meaningful unit of study. By making connections with geometry & time and geometry & area, the students are learning that geometry (just like everything else in math) is all around us.
