Dear Parents,
As mentioned during parent teacher conferences, I'd love to have volunteers come into the classroom to share their immigration story (this can yourself, grandparents, aunts or uncles). Students will prepare some questions ahead of time. To be most prepared, volunteers should think about sharing push (why they wanted to leave their origin company) and pull (what drew you to the US) factors. There are also two volunteer slots for each half hour. For example, the first time slot is 1-1:30pm on May 4, 2016. There are two slots for that half hour. One sign up for one person. In our Immigration unit, we've learned there have been many unique stories and experiences. So we thought it would be interesting to hear those stories at the same time. If you have any questions, please let me know. I look forward to seeing many of you in the next few weeks. Signup Genius Time Slot

Guest Post by Mrs. CarsonThe Bowman Book Swap is back, and this time we’re pairing the event with an ice cream social! Do your children have books that they've outgrown and are ready to pass on? Are you constantly in search of new books for your children to read? If so, participate in the Bowman Book Swap! Here's how it works: • Bring books to class THIS WEEK (April 25th–29th) and receive vouchers to be used at the Book Swap. • Receive 1 voucher for each book donated, up to a maximum of 10 vouchers. (Each student can donate a maximum of 20 books, but only 10 vouchers will be issued. Extra books will provide choice, be donated to classrooms, or saved for future books swaps.) Vouchers will be sent home in envelopes on Monday, May 2nd. • Bring your vouchers to the Book Swap on May 5th and redeem them for “new” books to take home. • Meet up with friends and eat a cup of Rancatore’s ice cream before or after you swap! ($1 per cup) Books must be appropriate for grades K–8 (no baby or board books) and be in gently used condition (no tears or missing pages). We are especially in need of middle school books for our graduating 5th graders. Books will not be accepted after the collection week, and vouchers will not be issued during the event. Want to help out? We still need volunteers to help sort books next week and to help with set up and clean up during the event. Volunteers will be given priority access to the Book Swap and receive a free ice cream! To volunteer, visit the Sign Up Genius link: http://bit.ly/BookSwap_IceCreamSocial Questions? Contact [email protected] Thank you so much Bowman PTO for planning and arranging to have the New England Brass Ensemble performance. The quartet is amazing and the students enjoyed it immensely. Please take a look below to see a student blog post about the event and a short video of the concert. New England Brass Ensmble Kid Blog by Nicole & MichWe liked the New England Brass Ensemble it was funny, the musicians seemed very enthusiastic about playing their instrument, and it wasn't hard to understand. An example of when we thought it was funny was when the Walter the trombone player kept repeating, "JAY! JAY! JAY!" We laughed really hard and Nicole almost choked because Walter sounded like a little kid and we've never seen an adult act like that! Another example of when it was funny was... Awesome Concert by Deniz and HaykOne reason why I thought the concert was fun was because it was REALLY funny! Especially the trombone guy. One example was when they were all making up ways how to play the brass instruments. Almost everyone kept laughing. I personally thought it was really funny how they were using the other instrument families to make up ways to play the brass instruments. Another reason why I thought the concert was fun and exciting was... To see the rest of the blog post, please login to Kid Blog and check out it out. Please leave your thoughts and comments. Funny Brass by Steven & RafiI think the concert was very well organized because it was funny, informative, well performed, and creative. It was really funny, for several reason. Every time Jay tried to talk, someone interrupted him. Like when Jay was trying to explain how brass instruments worked, Walt was like " Jay! Jay! Jay! Jay!" Another time the concert was funny was when Walt kept bragging about himself. Another funny part was... To see the rest of the blog post, please login to Kid Blog and check out it out. I apologize in advance for my students creating chaos and noise in your place of work. You see I’ve given my students a library challenge to complete instead of completing their homework. Insane, right? Here’s how it is supposed to work. The students are supposed to be learning as much as they can in school. However, they can learn even more outside of school provided they get the information and experience from quality sources. That is where the library comes into play. This week it is National Library Appreciation week so I’ve given my students 5 different challenges to complete in lieu of doing their homework. Challenge 1: Take a picture with 5 of the 100 Banned/Challenged book from 2000-2009. Goal of this challenge it to get a feel for navigating the library. They may need to ask for help, so it will be great for every student to meet the friendly librarians. Also, who doesn’t want to live on the wild side by reading a book that was once banned or still challenged by educators? Just giving the students knowledge that books are up for debate will certainly pique reading interest. Challenge 2: Show evidence and proof of having a library card. Goal of this challenge is to give students the power of the library. Students need to know they may reserve books, check out books, and return books and the many other resources from the library. But first, they’ll need a library card. Challenge 3: Selfie with a librarian. Goal of this challenge is to cement the relationship with their librarian. For the past 2 days, students should have come into the library to ask questions and get more information. Now, it is time for some fun and relationship building. The days of thinking the library is a place where dust has free range over the shelves and librarians are professional shushers are over! Challenge 4: Caught in the act (reading in a cozy spot or looking for a book). Goal of this challenge is to now put into practice all of the resources you’ve acquired over the first 3 days. Now that a student can find a book, check out a book and knows that librarians are cool resources to check in with, it is time to show how comfortable you are in the library. Challenge 5: Bring in a something you’ve checked out or pass you plan to use from the library. Goal of this challenge is to have students learn there is more to do in the library than just check out books. The library has an abundance of books, but they also have passes to museums, tickets to events, and clubs to join. By taking an interest in the extra offerings, students will get a greater appreciation of the resources around them. So librarians, please be patient with my students. The students have assured me that they will try to contain their excitement while they dig deeper into the world you have already engrossed yourself in. Sincerely, Chris Bruff Lots of students are incredibly excited about learning all they can in our Astronomy unit. Today we learned all about the earth revolving and rotating around the sun. We also learned why we have seasons. Take a look at the two videos in case you need to brush up on things you have forgotten. I am really looking forward to seeing all the creative pictures that show models of earth's rotations around the sun. Be sure to click the Science Homework link if you need a reminder. Also, the links for the videos we watched in class are listed above.
Guest Post from Christina LinHey 4th grade team,
I’m helping to organize the BBY volunteers for Whipple Hill this year. Just wanted to let you know I’ve asked our room parent coordinator to share the BBY dates through the class contact list grapevine. The SignUpGenius link is posted on our BBY website. http://www.signupgenius.com/go/20f0548a8a92ca64-bowman1 So you can easily check to see which parents are signing up for your walk. If you ask for parent volunteers later using a paper form, it would be helpful if you could also point them to the volunteer link so I can follow up on making sure they get the training beforehand. Thanks, Christina Lin The parent teacher conferences are just around the corner. They are scheduled for April 6, 7 & 13th. Like the fall conferences, I'll have a late day for conferences on April 6th. If you need an interpreter, need to change your conference time within 24 hours, need other dates or times, please send me an email.
*If you choose a conference time after 4pm, the main office will be closed. You'll need to go to the entrance that is to the left of the Gym.* For conference sign ups, I'll be using Sign Up Genius (click link to navigate to sign up). You'll be able to adjust your times slots and select the best conference time. I love meeting with you, parents, because I get a chance to share successes and challenges. Together we can accomplish great things by working towards a common goal, your child's education. I look forward to seeing you in a few weeks. In Math, the students are currently working on discovering all they can about symmetry. Symmetry is the quality of being made up of exactly the same parts are facing each other or can be shown by rotating the part on an axis. Many students have discovered that symmetry crosses over and connects with our geometry unit. Other discoveries include having found that mirror reflections are mirror images.
