In Reading, we are currently underway with our guided reading groups. The guided reading groups gives students an opportunity to use their known strategies to unpack their reading while I can deliver instruction. The groups in the classroom will be working on a different range of skills. The different skills range from, comprehension, summarizing, fluency, and learning how to have meaningful conversations about texts.
"Reading Jobs" will also be given. The assignments are specifically designed so that students will use the strategies learned in reading groups. The are reading assignments that should be completed by the due date. Appropriate times for students to work on the reading jobs include:
Rick Riordan has a new book, The Trials of Apollo: The Lost Oracle, that will hit a bookshelf near you in May 2016. If you're anything like me, you'll be itching to get your hands on a copy. But, you are in luck, The Gaurdian has obtained the first chapter from Mr. Riordan and Puffin books (the publisher). There has been quite a new field of study within our reading unit, Nonfiction!
So far students have learned that good nonfiction readers:
by Tamera WissingerOur class loved listening to Gone Fishing by Tamera Wissinger as our class read aloud. Check out some of the three students book reviews below. Thursday, November 13th was the inaugural celebration of Story Book Character Day. Many students throughout the Bowman Community dressed as characters from their favorite books. After the parade, students entered the gymnasium for a school read aloud of Small Pig by Arnold Lobel. The fourth graders were able to see the many characters the other Bowman students dressed up as. While some characters required a scarf, a recognizable hat, or a curly wig, there were plenty that of characters who simply needed to wear a specific color combination. Most people, teachers included, dressed up as characters from picture books. But there were a good number of students who dressed as a character from chapter books. Some highlights from the day. Most students are going to be coming into school dressed as a character from a book they enjoy. Please be thoughtful about the character you choose to be on Thursday, November 12. Some of you may decide not to dress up, and that is okay.
Regardless of your decision to dress up or not, please be sure to remember that reading is thinking. So, if you decide to become a character, think long and hard about your character, what is important to them, what do they carry with them and how does that define them on their journey. Last night I spent a great deal of time reading. Reading what you wonder? The news. Yup, the news. I feel like I could bring back the newspaper business all by myself (not really, but it would be nice). Although I spent a good deal of time reading about politics and weather patterns, I was also able to get brought up to speed on the events that are happening in the Middle East.
I also spent some time getting caught up on some Children's Literature. Most of my students have read, are currently obsessed, or are missing out on reading a book by Rick Riordan. Those are the reasons that lead me to pick up Mark of Athena. I've read the other books in the series and the fast paced action hasn't let me down. I'm not done with the book yet, but, I feel safe recommending this book to any student who loves adventure, heroes, action, and a little mushy love story. I've really have enjoyed setting aside a half an hour to read every night. I find that the time spent reading is what I look forward to most in the evening. I know that the kids will be tucked away and asleep in bed, I'll be able to curl up and read without getting interrupted. It is nice knowing my time won't be wasted while I aimlessly watch TV. Spending time reading is more important that filling out the reading log. But how can I, the teacher, ensure the students spend time reading and thinking? |
