We've been learning more and more about writing essays about our reading. Students have readily accepted the challenge of being reflective. Reading in "slow-mo" to not miss the important ideas, asking questions while reading, growing ideas using prompts has lead students to grow large ideas about their reading.
Writing their ideas has been a blast, too! Take a look at some important guidelines for the unit. As I've told most of my students, most of my best memories as a child had something to do with my bike. Whether it was riding to to the town pool, racing up and down the cul-de-sac, or skidding in the sand (not recommended without parent approval), riding bikes throughout the neighborhood brings back the best memories. Have you thought, "I need to get more information so my child can learn all the need to about riding their bike?" Or have you thought, "I want my child to learn all the safety rules about riding their bike?" then this is the perfect forum for you. Check out the link below and be ready to have your mind blown. We are entering the final weeks of the school year and I want to let you know about our Spring Concerts, year-end assessments and the Gr. 5 lesson program. Our beginning students are busily working on their concert songs. The pieces are: Lullaby (Orchestra Expressions, pg. 37), Kookaburra, Take Me Out to the Ball Game and Rock On Strings (Supplement Book, pg. 42-43). The Gr. 4 players will perform the first two pieces alone. The second two pieces will be performed with the Gr. 5 players. The concert songs do not need to be memorized; students should feel free to write in any fingerings or letter names to help them learn their pieces. On the concert days, if your family owns a folding music stand, please send it to school with your child (label all parts of the stand so it won’t get mixed up with the school’s stands) Lessons will continue until June 10th. At the last lesson, the string teachers will be listening to each child play one of their concert songs (either “Take Me Out to the Ball Game or Kookaburra). They will provide a written assessment of your child’s skill level and recommendations for continuing next year on a stringed instrument. Lessons continue in gr. 5, during the school day. As advanced students, we encourage our gr. 5 players to join the All Town Elementary Orchestra, which meets on Thursday afternoons at the Bridge School from 12:45-1:45. For most students, All Town Orchestra is their first ensemble experience. They gain valuable orchestral skills that they can use in middle school and high school. All Town Orchestra rehearsal is also like having a second lesson; skills introduced in lessons are reinforced and used in the repertoire. The Bowman Spring Instrumental Concerts are on Friday, May 27 for the school and Friday, June 3 for families at 9:15 AM. To prepare our students for their final performance, we will combine all our classes on Fri. May 20th. If your child can bring a folding music stand for that rehearsal (as well as for the concerts) we would appreciate it. We look forward to seeing you at the Bowman Spring Instrumental Concert. If you have any questions, please feel free to email me at [email protected]. Sincerely, Janet Haas Dear Parents,
As mentioned during parent teacher conferences, I'd love to have volunteers come into the classroom to share their immigration story (this can yourself, grandparents, aunts or uncles). Students will prepare some questions ahead of time. To be most prepared, volunteers should think about sharing push (why they wanted to leave their origin company) and pull (what drew you to the US) factors. There are also two volunteer slots for each half hour. For example, the first time slot is 1-1:30pm on May 4, 2016. There are two slots for that half hour. One sign up for one person. In our Immigration unit, we've learned there have been many unique stories and experiences. So we thought it would be interesting to hear those stories at the same time. If you have any questions, please let me know. I look forward to seeing many of you in the next few weeks. Signup Genius Time Slot Guest Post by Mrs. CarsonThe Bowman Book Swap is back, and this time we’re pairing the event with an ice cream social! Do your children have books that they've outgrown and are ready to pass on? Are you constantly in search of new books for your children to read? If so, participate in the Bowman Book Swap! Here's how it works: • Bring books to class THIS WEEK (April 25th–29th) and receive vouchers to be used at the Book Swap. • Receive 1 voucher for each book donated, up to a maximum of 10 vouchers. (Each student can donate a maximum of 20 books, but only 10 vouchers will be issued. Extra books will provide choice, be donated to classrooms, or saved for future books swaps.) Vouchers will be sent home in envelopes on Monday, May 2nd. • Bring your vouchers to the Book Swap on May 5th and redeem them for “new” books to take home. • Meet up with friends and eat a cup of Rancatore’s ice cream before or after you swap! ($1 per cup) Books must be appropriate for grades K–8 (no baby or board books) and be in gently used condition (no tears or missing pages). We are especially in need of middle school books for our graduating 5th graders. Books will not be accepted after the collection week, and vouchers will not be issued during the event. Want to help out? We still need volunteers to help sort books next week and to help with set up and clean up during the event. Volunteers will be given priority access to the Book Swap and receive a free ice cream! To volunteer, visit the Sign Up Genius link: http://bit.ly/BookSwap_IceCreamSocial Questions?
