Book Trailer by Lazaria P.L., Adrienne C., & Avery C.Fourth grade students took part in a presentation from the Museum of Science. Students used their background knowledge from their previous science unit as a building block. They knew an adaptation is a way an animal's body helps it survive, or live, in its environment. As humans, we have many adaptations, such as our teeth. With our incisors, k-9's and molars for teeth, that allow us to pierce, tear and grind all sorts of food (they make survival simpler).
During the presentation the students learned how the White Tree Frog has mucus on its feet to help it climb. They learned about the prehensile tail that acts as another leg for the Prehensile-tailed Skink and the flexible spine of the Ferret which allows it to burrow in tight places.. You are invited to a friend’s birthday party. You are given a bag of candy as a party gift when you leave. The bag consists of many different pieces of candy with Skittles, M&Ms, Gummie Bears, and Sour Patch Kids. Half of your pieces of candy are Skittles. Half of the remaining pieces of candy pieces are M&Ms. A fourth of the remaining pieces after the Skittles and M&Ms are Gummie Bears. The remaining pieces of candy are Sour Patch Kids. If there are 12 Sour Patch Kids in your bag, how many skittles are in your bag?
Check out the student's work and explanations. Good Morning Bowman Families,
I wanted to be sure that everyone has the attached information on MCAS. MCAS dates have changed slightly due to changes that the state is making in their content and administration. Please note that we will not have a fourth grade long composition day, however, there will be writing components as part of the base MCAS assessment. The revised MCAS assessment will be similar to previous tests in its multiple choice and short answer format and will also include an "on-demand" writing sample for some grade levels. As we have more information, we will share it. Parents of students in grades 3-5 are asked to note the dates for assessment. Attendance during these testing windows is very important. As part of our regular instruction on reading genres, Bowman teachers will help students understand the "test taking" genre of reading. Many children can become anxious when faced with assessments. We at Bowman believe that MCAS is just a snapshot of a child's progress during a year. We encourage you to remind children that MCAS is really about helping teachers understand how our students are doing so that we can provide the most targeted and appropriate instruction possible. Attached as well is January's PTA Broadside. Please note that fourth and fifth grade Math Night is at 6:30 tomorrow night (1/12/16) in the Bowman cafeteria. Bring your fourth and fifth graders and come enjoy a night of math investigations, games and challenges. Happy Monday, Mary The annual Bowman Science Fair is going to be held January 28th from 7pm to 8pm. Every student is encourage to attend, even if they do not present a science topic.
For more information, please check out the Bowman PTA Science Fair webpage for more info. Recently I was making space on my computer and I stumbled across a video. This video was something I had planned to show all of the students on the last day of school. However, time got away from us and the video wasn't shown.
Although you didn't get a chance to watch it in June, you'll be able to see the video now! Enjoy, relive the memories, and remember, Brufftopians prevail with a growth mindset. Guest Post from Strings Instructor Janet HaasDear String Families and Students,
Happy New Year to all of you and welcome back to our school routine! This message is a reminder to all students that your first performances are coming up and the next few weeks of lessons are extremely critical. The Bowman in-school performance date is Fri. Jan 29 at 9 AM. As we prepare for this concert, it is very important that students remember their instruments and music each week for lessons on Friday! Students will need their instruments (please have the child’s name on the outside) and their books. Students will be using their music for this performance. When we get closer to the concert, we will have a special rehearsal on Friday morning, Jan. 22. For that rehearsal, we would like our students to bring a folding music stand (if they own one). If you bring your stand, please label the stand cover and all parts of the stand with your last name. I also want to remind you about our exciting Winter Orchestra Concerts at Lexington High School at 7:30 PM, in the gym. Your child’s performance night is Thurs. Feb. 4. Please place this important date on your family's calendar. This concert features Gr. 4 beginning strings from Bowman, Bridge and Harrington, the Clarke Gr. 6 Strings, the Clarke Gr. 7/8 Full Orchestra and the Lexington High School Chamber Orchestra. It is a wonderful concert that showcases the string program in less than an hour! There is an admission fee of $5 for adults. We are asking that performers arrive early, 6:45 PM, for tuning, placement in the gym and warm up. Beginners will need to have their concert songs memorized for this performance. If you have any questions about performances, practice tips or how to tune a stringed instrument, please feel free to send me an email and I will respond ASAP. I look forward to seeing you at our performances. Sincerely, Janet Haas |
